Women who have bulimia in pregnancy have more symptoms of anxiety and depression compared to pregnant women without eating disorders. A new study from the Norwegian Institute of Public Health (NIPH) shows that they also have lower self-esteem and are more dissatisfied with life and their relationship with their partner. The findings come from the world’s first major population study of psychosocial factors in bulimia (bulimia nervosa) during pregnancy.

Teenagers who are overweight or obese are more likely to have considered suicide than those who are a normal weight, according to new research presented at a meeting of the Royal College of Psychiatrists’ Child and Adolescent Faculty. Researchers from the University of Liverpool measured the height and weight of 799 Year 9 students from five comprehensive schools in Cheshire. This was used to calculate each student’s body mass index (BMI).

According to a new study in the September/October 2008 issue of the journal Child Development, children who are maltreated tend to have a lot of re-exposure to family violence, and this re-exposure often leads to increased psychological problems.

Researchers at UT Southwestern Medical Center have designed a way to improve electrical stimulation of nerves by outfitting electrodes with the latest in chemically engineered fashion: a coating of basic black, formed from carbon nanotubes. The nanotube sheathing improves the signals received and transmitted by electrodes, which researchers say is a potentially critical step for advancing electrical nerve stimulation therapy.
