People with recurrent depression have high rates of many common physical illnesses, such as gastric ulcer, rhinitis/hay fever, osteoarthritis, thyroid disease, hypertension and asthma, a new study has found. Published in the May 2008 issue of the British Journal of Psychiatry, the study compared 1546 people with recurrent depression with 884 psychiatrically healthy controls in terms of past treatment for 16 different physical disorders.

Hi Jane – I hope you are going well today.
I am so weary of reading ” a new study has found ” …
firstly, these so-called ’studies’ are 3rd-year degree students merely completing a unit, and casting about for a topic not previously submitted.
then, it doesn’t take A Graduate to figure out that ANYBODY with ANY two out of that list – ulcer, asthma, arthritis, hayfever etc., is going to be pretty darn depressed a lot of the time.
My favourite ’study’ is the one which shreiks
“people on antidepressants are more likely to kill themselves”, because obviously, if a person is deprerssed enough to consider suicide, then they are already getting medication to help them avoid it.
(I found your blog after Guugle searching blogs for ‘osteoarthritis’)
